Glimpses of World History, a book written by Jawaharlal
Nehru (the first Prime Minister of India)when he was in jail,to his daughter,
IndiraPriyadarshini in the form of letters,is a panoramic sweep of the history
of humankind. There are many books available in the market with the same theme.
What then is so special about this book? What makes every reader of this book
develop a special bond with it?
1)
As mentioned before, the book is a collection of letters written
by father (Nehru) to his young daughter Indira as a birthday present to hern
(As he wanted to present something he could “afford”). This gives the reader a
chance to imagine how Indira’s mind could have been shaped by this book. The
book in the similar vein has got the potential to shape every reader’s mind.
2)
Father’s concern about his daughter, family, country and
the world in General with personal viewsmakes it a unique read.
3)
Love and concern for humanity; account of rise and fall
of great civilizations, empires, emperors and kings; Birth of religions, its
effects on State and the individual; Industrial Revolution and some of the
outstanding Scientific achievements; Shaping of modern world, elaborating all
the “ISMS” like communism, fascism, socialism; Special discussion about his
favorite leaders, towering figures, writers, philosophers, travelers and
scientists; Harsh criticism of slavery, religion, imperialism and colonialism; The
book is an ocean of great thoughts is all I can say. A definite read for every
person with intellectual curiosity.
4)
The way narration
is made interesting with a dramatic description about most important phases in
the history of humanity is a treat for eyes to read.
Some say it is not an accurate account of the World
happenings but who cares when the Letters are written to a 13 year old child
(and millions of other children whom he cares for) and the boring History is
made so interesting and realistic to read giving a real feel of the most important
events of the World History.
Assume it to be an attempt of a rich son (Jawaharlal) to
prove his abilities and eligibility to assume a responsible position for the
country, or be it the wish of a father to educate his daughter (and million
other children) in a special but most impressive manner. Whatever the reason
might be, the book is a gift to mankind and it reflects the world view of Nehru
and his grasp of History. Written in a lucid language and making history very
interesting to read, at the same time educating the reader to such an extent
which is sure enough to create clash of Ideasin his/her fertile mind, this book
I feel is a must read for everyone willing to know the world better. One drawback
is that the book ends with the events during Nehru’s life in Prison and was
never updated. Hope the book gets updated, hopefully from a politician ready to
prove his worthiness with a real vision and desire to benefit the mankind. Is there
any? I doubt but still I hope.
Sir, I really want to read this book. But unfortunately can not buy it under my circumstances. If u could send the book or a link to download it for free, I would be grateful. my email:shahbaazuddin786@gmail.com
